Community over Competition
It is our human nature to be competitive. I am sure you all constantly see posts about community over competition, but this is something that truly impacts my every day life. I could not be more blessed than I have been in the past year. I was overwhelmed with happiness when I attended the Looks Like Film Oklahoma Summit this past year. When I first walked in the room filled with other local photographers it was intimidating, but I am sure most felt the same way I did. Then, when the event started it was a perfect day. It was the most incredible moment, to watch all of these photographers capturing different angles, helping each other, sharing knowledge with one another, and inspiring us all. Each and everyone of them are amazing! It brings me such joy to see many local Oklahoma photographers coming together to help one another, to reassure us that we are not alone. Yes, at the end of the day, it is about making a living for your family and sometimes that involves being competitive and striving to be the best. On the other side of that, we need to remember that our community of photographers are family. They are some of the only people who understand the true struggle and the happiness that comes with being a professional photographer. We are here to lift one another up, to answer questions that some do not know the answer too, to be supportive. For me, photography brings meaning back to my life. Photography makes me feel like I am on top of the world. Sometimes at my worst moments when I am feeling down photography makes me feel alive. Though we all strive to be the best, we really need to strive to be unique and different. It is our job as photographers to see the bigger picture. Photography is art and one thing I love about art is that there is not a wrong or right way to do things. We all have a different perspective. We view the world different from others. As a photographer, I try to find different ways to portray my photographs. I am inspired by the work of many other photographers.
